The Municipality of Kiamba specifies the School going population: the Pre-school from 3-6 years have 7,170 total number with the ratio of 1.06. The male preschoolers have the total number of 3,689 or 6.96% and the female preschoolers have 3,481 or 6.56%. Kiamba has the total of 4.92 average household size.
Urbanization Levels For the Past 20 Years
Based on National Census, only Barangay Poblacion is identified as rural area of Municipality of Kiamba and being the Central Business District and the center for economic activities and has the most number of population with a total of 12,228 or 23% of the total population in the year 2007. The other barangays such as Badtasan, Datu Dani, Gasi, Kapate, Katubao, Kayupo, Kling, Lagundi, Lebe, Lomuyon, Luma, Maligang, Nalus, Salakit, Suli, Tablao, Tamadang and Tambilil has a total registered population of 40,812 or 77% of the total population in Kiamba and these areas were all identified as rural area.
Population Density and Built-up Density
The Barangay Poblacion got the highest number of population density that comprises to the total number of 27.17 but only have 0.11 built-up density due to big number of population living since it is belong to the urban area. Next to it is Barangay Kayupo with a total of 4.24 population density and 0.69 built-up density while the barangay who got the lowest population density with a total number of 0.40 but the biggest built-up density with the total of 6.12 is Barangay Gasi in which identified as rural area.
Historical Growth of Population
The first census of population conducted in Kiamba was in December 31, 1918 with a total population of 12,734. Population count those early years in Kiamba was very low because Christian settler from Luzon and other parts of the country just begun to arrive in this far flung place in Southern Mindanao. Kiamba’s political jurisdiction at that time includes district of Kling on the east and Barrio Bentugan, annexed to Lebak, and barrios of Balingao, Palimbang, Kanipaan, Kraan, Maganao, Malisbong, Milbuk, Sangay, and Wali, all in the western part of the municipality and it went as far as Siguil now boundary of General Santos City and Maasim.
The second census of the population was done in January 1, 1939 with a total population of 14,687. Kiamba ‘s population rose by 15.34% from 1918 to 1939 with an annual growth rate of 0.72%.
1948 census of population result show that population of Kiamba grew up by 0.74% from 1939 to 1948 with annual growth rate of 0.83%. The low population rate was due to low migration, as a result of the World War II and the exclusion of some barangays on the west except the municipality of Maitum, formerly a Barangay of Kiamba. Total count in 1948 was registered at 15,824.
In 1960 Kiamba’s population was doubled within the span of twelve years, the population was registered at 104.5% with an annual growth rate of 6.14%, it was during this year when Christian settlers coming from Ilocos Region, Cebu and Leyte and other parts of the country begun to migrate and look for an opportunity in Kiamba. A total population of 32, 358 was registered in February 15, 1960 census of population
The 1970 census showed a negative growth rate at 4.04%. The negative indication of our population was due to decrease in our political jurisdiction in 1969, or when Maitum and Maasim was created as a municipality. 1970’s population was registered at 21,424.
In 1975 growth rate was very low at 0.52% or just a mild increased 2.62% From1970 to1975 , population was registered at 21,968. During this years the in-migration was lower than out-migration due to the unstable peace and order condition not only in Kiamba but as well as the whole island of Mindanao.
The May 1, 1980 census of population result shows that within the span of five years Kiamba’s population rose by 29.50% with an annual grown rate of 5.30%. The opening of MILUDECO in 1975, a multi million logging company boosted the economy of the municipality and that in-migration also increases. Population count was registered at 28,467.
In 1990, a census of population was conducted with a registered annual growth rate of 2.21%, the lowest so far in the history of Kiamba. It was during this decade that Population Development Program was fully implemented all throughout the nation. The low growth rate is a significant indicator that the program was successful.
Another census of population was conducted in 1995 with a total population count of 39,647 with a slight increase of 4,229 or 10.82 % increase from 1990. Based on the 1990 and 1995 census population Annual growth rate was registered at 2.41%. There was a slight increase in the annual growth rate brought about by the abolition of the population program.
Crude Birth Rate (CBR) and Crude Death Rate for the Last Five Years
The records shows that from the 2006 crude birth rate of 18, it raised in 2007 to 10% and reached a total birth rate of 21.9 on the year 2010. With such increase in crude birth rate, the municipality’s death rate also decreased reaching the rate of 2.5 or -60%. This could be the result of Kimaba’s extensive and intensive health programs particularly in Maternity care and child care that further improved its birth statistics and decreasing the mortality rates in the municipality.
Literacy Rate of Population 5 years Old and Over
Literacy rate for the entire population from ages 5 years old and over is 37,396 or 81%. But this is exceptionally higher among children of school age sector. And the illiterates consist of 2,934 or 6.37% majority of them are those who belong to the tribal minority such as the T’bolis and Muslims. Also it can be noted that younger workforces are more literate than the old ones.
